The University of California San Diego Price Center expansion added more than 170,000 square feet to the existing student center facilities. This provided new space for retail, dining, meetings, performance events, student organizations, and other campus services.
The facility consists of two square tube buildings that intersect a central three-dimensional trapezoid structure. To help differentiate the building components, cool-white sources light the tubes, while warm-white sources illuminate the three-dimensional trapezoid. Grids of lines and circles were utilized to accentuate the flow of the structures, while bringing a modern, urban aesthetic. Indirect lighting used in the large atrium of the trapezoid building furnishes comfortable light levels. Diffuse covers on these fixtures diminish glare in the vast space.
The project did not apply for LEED certification. However, in keeping with the university’s goals for energy efficiency, it was built to LEED Silver standards.
